Book Description:   Of all life’s financial shocks, few compare to bringing home an infant. Just one tiny person costs $250,000 to raise– not including college! How will you pay for it? That agonizing question fuels mothers’ choices about their careers, budgets, and families. Some lean in, some scale back or seek new opportunities–there are no easy answers . . . but lots of rewarding possibilities. “Smart Mom, Rich Mom” explores how women today are navigating the financially challenging career/parenting years. Written by a national money columnist and mom of two, the book chronicles people who have stayed in the game–full-time, freelance, self-employed, and more–and emerged more prosperous and empowered. “Smart Mom, Rich Mom” mines their experiences to uncover both career advice and spending and savings strategies that everyone can use. Stories, checklists, action steps, planning tools, and more explain how to:

– Prepare financially for parenthood–whether you’re expecting your first child or your third

– Balance thrift with generating income and investing wisely

– Find flexibility at work while safeguarding your earning potential

– Save for both college and retirement despite increased expenses

– Plan for unexpected events, like a layoff or illness

– And much more

Kids change our lives, adding joy but draining bank accounts. “Smart Mom, Rich Mom” helps you adopt healthy habits–and make hard decisions–that pay off in abundance.

Review

This is a fantastic book for mom’s who not only want to stay in the game, but make the best financial decisions for their family.  While I am an “empty nester”, I lead a group of entrepreneurial women in a monthly class. Most of them are young mom’s trying their best to take care of their kids and still contribute financially to their household.  I purchased this book for them to read and was very pleased with it.  I wish I had this advice when I was a young mom. It’s direct, applicable and gives practical advice for mothers on how to be smart about money. Thrift is the best use of all your resources — including money AND time — so mommy savings tips need to expand from coupon-clipping and into longer-term investments.  Moms can feel overwhelmed thinking about and planning for the future, but the author makes it “doable” by sharing her own experience, while also drawing on others’ stories.  The best part is that you can walk away from this book with clear ideas about how to take better ownership of your family’s finances. This is  must-read for women, mom’s and mom’s-to-be and even an old timer like me found so much to learn!

Found: A Story of Questions, Grace, and Everyday PrayerFound

    Book Description:

“My first year of motherhood I lost prayer…”

I lost early mornings of quiet, mornings in my pajamas with a Bible in my lap, mornings when I spoke my mind’s chaos into God’s ear and let the chaos come back ordered, holy sealed. I lost peace. I lost clarity and certitude. My faith was never perfect before my son was born, but somewhere in that first year, somewhere in my distraction and exhaustion, I lost the Spirit-life I had known. I blamed myself.

    Review

I have read Brother Lawrence’s Practicing the Presence of God and have enjoyed it, but it never really hit home the way this book did!  California-based mom-blogger Boyett explains that she “lost prayer” when her first child was born and she went looking to get it back by taking a sabbatical at a Benedictine monastery where she quickly sees the similarities in lifestyle and a way to bring balance to her own life. She found her way back to God and a balanced life by studying the  Benedictine Rule, and in this book she shares the insights she has gleaned from her journey.  It is an enlightening, insightful read and I found much to apply to my own life.

      Surprised by Motherhood

      Surprised by Motherhood
      By Lisa-Jo Baker
      Tyndale
      Retail Price $15.99
      Amazon Price: $10.11

      Book Description:

A lawyer with a well-stamped passport and a passion for human rights, Lisa-Jo Baker never wanted to be a mom. And then she had kids. Having lost her own mother to cancer as a teenager, Lisa-Jo felt lost on her journey to womanhood and wholly unprepared to raise children.

Surprised by Motherhood is Lisa-Jo’s story of becoming and being a mom, and in the process, discovering that all the “what to expect” and “how to” books in the world can never truly prepare you for the sheer exhilaration, joy, and terrifying love that accompanies motherhood.

Set partly in South Africa and partly in the US (with a slight detour to Ukraine along the way), Surprised by Motherhood is a poignant memoir of one woman’s dawning realization that being a mom isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being present.

In this book the author shares her own journey through motherhood. You may think that everything has been said about motherhood, but the delightful thing is that the author is one-of-a-kind and gives a perspective that is uniquely her own. So many times we define motherhood by the sleepless nights, mounds of laundry and numbers of diapers changed for the day. Giglio will help you focus on the pure joy that motherhood brings in spite of the mundane, hard things and will change your perspective on motherhood.  A great read for all moms and moms-to-be.
