    By Johan van Parys
    Liturgical Press
    Retail Price $16.95
    Amazon Price: $15.26

    Book Description:

What are Vespers? Where have the consecration bells gone? Why do some liturgical ministers vest and others don’t? Blinking sneakers on altar servers, Christmas trees in January . . . what is that all about? These are some of the candid questions that Catholics and others often wonder about the liturgy. In What’s the Smoke For? expert liturgist Johan van Parys offers helpful and engaging answers. Based on church teaching and rooted in sound theology, Johan’s responses invite inquiring minds to continue to think about what is happening in the church and to be engaged in learning more about liturgy and the arts.

    Review

This fresh work explains the liturgy in all its aspects for the common man and while it is written by a respected liturgics scholar, it is done so in plain language making it easy to read and understand. The author answers many questions that many are thinking, but afraid to ask.  I would recommend this to anyone who would like to understand what the liturgy is, how it functions, and why churches in the prayer book tradition hold so firmly to it.

      Eager to Love

      Eager to Love
      By Richard Rohr
      Franciscan Media
      Retail Price $21.99
      Amazon Price: $14.66

      Book Description:

Richard Rohr focuses his attention on all frames and doorways to the divine—the alternative way of Francis of Assisi.

Francis of Assisi, one of the most beloved of all saints, was at once very traditional and entirely revolutionary in the ways of holiness. As a standing paradox, he both stood barefoot on the earth and yet touched the heavens; he was grounded in the church and yet instinctively moved toward the cosmos; he lived happily inside the visible and tangible, and yet both suffered and rejoiced in the invisible.

Rohr places the tradition as first practiced by Francis, and subsequently by others, within a context for the uninitiated audience. This is not a historical accounting, but rather a perspective about how the alternative orthodoxy can deepen spiritual life for anyone, whether Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, secular, or spiritual seeker.

Eager to Love is grounded in the Gospels, the prophets, a broad blend of psychology and theology, and in literature and art, to continue to communicate through all the sources that articulate specific alternative ways of understanding God with us.

      Review

The life of St. Francis of Assisi was a paradigm of simplicity, humanity, and love. In today’s busy world, his practices have enormous appeal.  The author demonstrates the enduring significance of Franciscan wisdom, calling us all to greater authenticity. By examining the life and practices of St. Francis, we can emulate him by instituting spiritual practices into our own lives such as simplicity, humility, compassion, solitude, service, and prayer.  This is a great book if you want to deepen your spiritual life.

        Book Description:

At age eight, Ramona Treviño climbed to the top of a roof and begged God to let her know he was real. After receiving a sign, she made a pact with herself to follow him always. But family difficulties and growing pains made it hard for her to continue on that path.

Pregnant at 16, she dropped out of high school and entered an abusive marriage, which ended in divorce. Wanting to make a difference and to help girls in similar tough situations, she accepted a job as the manager of a Planned Parenthood facility in Sherman, Texas. Over time, however, Ramona began to grapple with whether she was doing women more harm than good, setting her on a path to seek the truth, no matter where it might lead.

Realizing she could no longer refer women for abortions or provide them with false assurances of risk-free sex, Ramona took a leap of faith and left the financial security of her job. Her ultimate conversion involved a full return to the Catholic faith of her childhood and a new role as a pro-life advocate and speaker.

This compelling story tells of Ramona’s struggle to reconcile her identity as a daughter of God with a world that sends conflicting messages concerning the source of our dignity and happiness. It is the honest and heartfelt account of a woman who, with the help of grace, strove to overcome the wounds of her own past while becoming an agent of healing for others.

        Review

This book was inspirational.  Within its pages the author shares her life…the good, the bad, and the ugly.  She has a way of connecting with the reader and getting directly to the heart of the matter.  She is deeply insightful, helping you to examine your own life and encouraging you to take the steps to living life to its fullest.  This was a powerful, interesting, exciting and life giving book that has helped me to better understand God, his love and grace.
